Vital Records has death records (since 1881) for all of New York State except New York City. It does not have these records for New York City (the boroughs of Manhattan, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island)). Death records are also available from the local Registrar of Vital Statistics where the event occurred. Requirements

Death records are managed by the Vital Records Section of New York Department of Health for most of the state from 1881 to present. Certified death records are available to the spouse, parent, or child of the deceased as well as those with a documented legal right, documented medical need, or a court order.
